Here’s a Clue in 2022… Did you know the Recycling Center shreds paper on-site? As you know, it is that time of year to file your taxes. But what do you do with all those papers from past years that you do not need anymore? You can shred them! Paper is one of the most widely recycled materials in the U.S. The Roswell Recycling Center offers a “While You Wait” paper shredding service, for free to Roswell residents, Tuesdays-Fridays from 2-4 PM. Roswell residents may also drop off paper anytime during operational hours and it will be held in a locked box until shredding time later in the afternoon.

Did you ever wonder how paper is recycled? According to the American Forest and Paper Association (afandpa.org):

  • It begins at any number of locations, including community curbside programs, drop-off centers, schools, or offices. It starts with you filling the recycling bin. *For sensitive documents, bring to your recycling center for shredding (tape and staple free).
  • After the paper is collected, it goes to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where it’s loaded on a conveyer belt and contaminants are removed.
  • Once the recovered paper is free of contaminants, it is separated and baled. Then it’s transported to a paper mill where the recycling process begins.
  • At the paper mill, the paper bale is loaded into a pulper, which looks like a giant blender. It’s mixed with water and other ingredients. Then it is churned and broken down.
  • From there, this slurry of fibers is screened for further cleaning. And as it dries it is formed into rolls of paper — newly recycled paper.
