MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team embarks on its final Sun Belt Conference road trip this weekend, facing Georgia State in a three-game series Friday-Sunday, April 29-May 1. The Warhawks (25-21, 9-12) split a doubleheader vs. the Panthers in Monroe in 2021, with the both games decided by a 2-1 score. The Warhawks won the opener with two runs in the sixth inning to overcome an early 1-0 Georgia State lead. The Panthers scored a run in each of the first two innings in game two and held off a seventh-inning Warhawk threat. The third game was canceled due to inclement weather. First pitch for the series opener Friday is set for 4 p.m. CT. Saturday’s game starts at noon CT and Sunday’s series finale is set for 10 a.m. CT.
“As the season goes on, the games become more and more important,” said ULM softball head coach Molly Fichtner. “This is the point in the season where everyone is tired, everyone is exhausted, and the people who want it the most are going to be successful at this time of year. We just have to take care of take care of business.”
Georgia State (16-28, 6-12) won a series vs. UT Arlington at home earlier this month before losing in back-to-back series on the road at Texas State and at Coastal Carolina. The Warhawks face the Panthers in another team that excels in baserunning as Georgia State is second in the league and 12th nationally in stolen bases with 2.23 per game. Three Panthers rank in the Top-5 of the league’s standings in that category with Daisy Hess in second (26), Emily Brown (21) third and Chloe Middlebrooks fifth with 18. Hess broke Georgia State’s 22-year-old single-season record for stolen bases Tuesday night vs. Kennesaw State.
Junior infielder Bailee Richardson leads Georgia State with a .311 batting average. She is one of three Panthers, Brown and Hess the others, to start in all 44 games this season. Richardson is the team leader in runs (23), hits (42), total bases (81), RBI (36) and home runs (10). Redshirt-junior Emily Buck has a team-best 3.79 ERA with 21 appearances, 11 starts and a 6-5 record in the circle. Hallie Adams (4-12) has 17 starts, including Tuesday vs. the Owls.
For the Warhawks, Kennedy Johnson leads the team with an overall batting average of .372 and is hitting .406 in Sun Belt Conference games. Johnson leads the league in hits (26) and doubles (10) and is tied for the top spot with 21 RBI. Her 14 doubles in all games rank 23rd nationally. Outfielder Lourdes Bacon had her 50th hit of the season Tuesday vs. Grambling and is 16th in the SBC in league games with 19 hits and 18th with 13 runs scored. She is tied for eighth with six stolen bases.
Bacon hit .714 (5-7) in the doubleheader vs. Grambling and how has a team-best 14 games with multiple hits. Johnson (11) and Alexis Chavez, now at 10 games this season, are second and third on that list. Johnson has nine games with at least two runs batted in with Madelyn Fletcher and Kennedy Page tied for second with six games with multiple RBI. Korie Kreps went 2-for-2 in the game one victory vs. Grambling, scored three runs and added an RBI. Taylor Broddick scored the Warhawks’ first run and game-winner with a hit and a walk in the late game.
Adrianna Chavarria (5-6) pitched four innings in relief and picked up the win in game two of the non-conference doubleheader Tuesday. She gave up only one hit while striking out eight. Kinsey Kackley earned the game one win, allowing only one hit and no earned runs. Kackley returned to the circle in relief in a solid effort in Wednesday’s loss. Chavarria and Kackley are ninth and 10th, respectively, in the Sun Belt Conference stat chart for overall ERA at 2.60 and 2.62. Victoria Abrams is 15th (3.08).
